North Side Gang Chief Vincent Drucci Slain by Police After Altercation
Vincent ‘The Schemer’ Drucci, the notorious leader of the North Side gang and bitter rival to Al Capone’s South Side syndicate, was shot and killed yesterday by Detective Dan Healy while in police custody.
The incident occurred as officers were transporting Drucci to the Detective Bureau following a raid on legislative headquarters at the Congress Hotel. According to official reports, Drucci became increasingly belligerent and began attacking the officers within the squad car.
When he allegedly attempted to reach for Detective Healy’s service weapon, the officer fired four shots, striking Drucci in the arm, leg, and abdomen. The mobster was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Drucci, who took command of the North Siders following the death of Hymie Weiss, was a veteran of the bloody bootlegging wars that have plagued Chicago since the death of Dean O’Banion. His death marks a major blow to the North Side organization on the eve of a heated municipal election, leaving the gang without its chief strategist.
While the police department has launched an internal inquiry, initial statements suggest the shooting was a justifiable act in line of duty, though associates of the gang leader claim the killing was an execution.
Why It Mattered
Drucci’s death effectively decapitated the North Side leadership during the height of the Prohibition-era gang wars, paving the way for George ‘Bugs’ Moran to take control. It also highlighted the frequently blurred lines between law enforcement, political corruption, and organized crime in 1920s Chicago.
Then vs Now
In 1927, many viewed such ‘street justice’ by police as a necessary, if brutal, method of curbing gang violence; today, an officer shooting a suspect in custody would trigger a massive civil rights investigation and national media scrutiny.
